Thundercats Win Three Medals at JV State Championship
The Thundercats dominated the Illinois State Junior Varsity Championships this weekend taking home two Gold Medals and a Bronze Medal in three different events. The combined LHS-VHHS fencing team joined the Great Lakes High School Fencing Conference this year and has taken established fencing teams, like Stevenson and New Trier, by surprise.
Katherine Liu, a sophomore at LHS, beat 36 competitors to tie for third place in the women’s sabre event and earn the Bronze Medal. Ethan Stein, a senior at VHHS, won the Gold Medal in the men’s epee event beating 43 other fencers. Brian Lemay, a freshman at LHS, took home the Gold Medal in the men’s sabre event, beating 43 fencers to win the top slot.
Buoyed by Lemay’s winning the Gold, and the strong showing by Bryan Weiss, Tim Johnston, Daniel Zou, Declan Kelleher, Joe Fusco and Max Lund, the Thundercat’s men sabre team won 1st place at the tournament and the title of JV State Champions in men’s sabre.
In addition, Stein’s Gold Medal, along with strong performances by Gordon Schlicht, Andrew Bringle and Tore Posterli put the Thundercat’s men’s epee team in third place for the bronze in the men’s epee event.
This is the Thundercat’s first season, so we are very proud of each of our fencers’ individual achievements and the team’s overall accomplishments.
